Write better jewelry descriptions

You’ve done your research you have chosen where and how you will sell your jewelry online. You’ve taken great detailed photos of each piece of jewelry. Now comes the hard part, writing jewelry descriptions that sell. A lot of jewelry makers struggle with this part. If you find yourself at a loss for words when writing your descriptions, don’t worry, there are some simple tricks that will help you.

You may be new to writing to sell, but you certainly have read some sales ads. What makes you want to buy something after you have read the description? Get some catalogs and read the descriptions. What kinds of words are they using? People buy things because they believe it will improve their lives in some way or it strikes an emotional cord.

Descriptive words like elegant and luxurious create a totally different mood than just saying gold or pearl. Think about how you want your customers to feel when they are wearing your jewelry. Will they feel pampered or funky?
While you want to use great descriptive words, you also need to be detailed. Your customers need to know about all the materials, colors, textures, and size. They want to know if there is anything special about the materials or how you came to use them. What story does your jewelry have to tell? Try not to make the details sound like some big technical list, but make them clear.

Give your jewelry an amazing name. Naming each piece of jewelry reinforces to your customers that the jewelry is handmade. They may be blue beaded earrings but doesn’t Azure Sky Chandelier Earrings sound so much better? See how many different names you can think of for each piece of your jewelry. Which name evokes the feeling you want your customers to experience?

Don’t worry if you have a hard time at first, you’ll get better. If you fear that you are not a good writer, don’t worry about that either. The same creativity and inspiration you used to design and create your jewelry is the same creativity and inspiration that helps you write. Take your time and pull your your thesaurus.

There are also books you can read about writing good descriptions. Try checking out Words that sell by Richard Banyan or Hypnotic writing by Joe Vitale. You library may have more books for you to choose from. Read all kinds of ads, not just ones for jewelry. Remember to pay close attention to the words they use. Before you know it you will be writing irresistible jewelry descriptions and your customers won’t be able to get enough!
